Digestion System of ruminant pointing out the abomasum found in upper area of digestive tract after the omasum and before the small intestine.
  • Abomasum is the fourth compartment and acts as a stomach like in non-ruminants.
  • Lined with a mucous membrane and secretes strong acids and digestive enzymes.
  • Digests feed fractions not fermented in the rumen (some proteins and lipids).
  • Digests of bacterial proteins produced in the rumen.
