compartments: the reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum.
- Positioned prior to the stomach
and functions in fiber fermentation
- Acts as a site for anearobic( no
oxygen) bacterial fermentation. Anaerobic microorgnisms live and
reproduce.
- Internal surface lined with
papillae (small finger like projections) that
absorbs microbial byproducts, particularly the volatile fatty acids (VFAs)
