Digestion System of ruminant pointing out the rumen compartment found in upper area of digestive tract after reticulum and before omasum.
  • The rumen is actually composed of 4 different compartments: the reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum.
  • Positioned prior to the stomach and functions in fiber fermentation
  • Acts as a site for anearobic( no oxygen) bacterial fermentation.  Anaerobic microorgnisms live and reproduce.
  • Internal surface lined with papillae (small finger like projections) that  absorbs microbial byproducts, particularly the volatile fatty acids (VFAs)
