In order to complete this virtual lab, students will have first thoroughly read the following modules in on the Animal Nutrition CD, ©Patricia Schoknect, Rutgers University of New Jersey, The Mid-Atlantic Consortium 2002.

1.        Plants as Feeds

2.       Assessment of Nutritive Value

3.       Digestive Anatomy

4.       Rumen Fermentation

Students are to first look at the virtual lab form.  On the instructions page for the lab report is a printer icon to view a printable version of the lab report.  This might be useful to jot down your observations as you are retrieving the test results from the virtual lab.

Take a look at the Rubric page to see how you will be accessed.

When you are ready to begin, go to the virtual lab page and begin your analysis.

  1. Determine from your reading why this analysis of feed and how it reacts in the rumen environment is important.  This will be your purpose.
  2. Look at all the different feed on the lab page available for you to introduce to the rumen environment.  The choices include forages and concentrates.  You will test each feed for pH, Ammonia and Methane.  Choose at least 6 different feeds and make an educated guess or prediction “hypothesis” of what the outcome of the different tests will be.
  3.  Describe the materials, procedures and steps.
  4.  Make observations on the different outcomes of each feed.
  5.  Analyze and compare the feeds against each other.  Explain what your data means. Interpret your data. Explain any results that were not predicted.
  6. Finally, in one or two sentences explain if your results agree or disagree with your hypothesis
  7. Fill out the online lab form and submit.  Print out the confirmation page and submit to you teacher.
  8. Finally, after finishing the lab report, you will submit a self-evaluation of your work by using the self-evaluating rubric found on this site.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask the instructor.
