The rumen
environment is an amazing environment filled with microbes. The balance of
this environment is directly related to the type of feed that is introduced and how it
is fermented.
In this lab we will discover what type of feed keeps
the rumen environment in balance, and what type of feed will create imbalance
and possibly create metabolic disease in the ruminant. You will choose from
forages and concentrates as possible feed for your cow, and analyze the
rumen fluid using the virtual lab. You will then create a lab report to show
your data and support your theories.
Finally you will be able to self evaluate your lab
report by using the self evaluating rubric found on this site.
Begin by selecting
"Instructions on how to use the
Virtual Lab" on the menu bar on the left side of your screen.
This virtual lab is to be used in conjunction
with Module 4 on the Animal Nutrition CD, ©Patricia Schoknect, Rutgers
University of New Jersey, The Mid-Atlantic Consortium 2002. Although the
CD is for Undergraduate Students, this Virtual Lab was created for High School
Students.
